Website builder vs custom website: which is right for you?
Wix, Squarespace and similar builders are popular for good reasons. Here is when they are the right choice, and when a custom website pays off.
Website builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Shopify let you put a site together yourself from a template. A custom website is designed and built for your business by a web designer or developer. Both can work well. The right choice depends on your time, your goals and how much the website needs to do for your business.
When a website builder makes sense
- You are just starting out and need something simple online quickly.
- You enjoy doing it yourself and have time to learn the tool.
- A template's design and features match what you need without much changing.
- The website is not a main source of new customers yet.
When a custom website pays off
- You want to be found on Google. A custom site can be built lean and fast, with clean code, a page for each service and structured data. Builders have improved, but heavy templates and apps can slow pages down, and page speed matters for search rankings and for visitors on phones.
- You need to stand out. Templates are shared by thousands of businesses. A custom design fits your brand and your customers.
- The site must do something specific. Booking rules, quote forms, payment flows or connections to your existing tools are easier to get exactly right when the site is built for you.
- You don't have time. A builder is only cheap if your time is free. Writing, designing, testing and keeping a site updated takes many hours.
- You want to own it. On a builder, your site lives on that platform and its monthly plan. A custom static site can be hosted almost anywhere.
Think about the cost of ownership
Compare more than the first invoice. A builder has a monthly subscription, often plus paid apps for bookings, forms or SEO, every year the site is live. A custom website has a larger upfront cost and then hosting and any maintenance you choose. Add up a few years of each, and include the value of your own time.
A middle path
Some businesses start on a builder and move to a custom website once the site becomes important to sales. If you do this, plan the move carefully: keep your page addresses or set up redirects, so you don't lose the Google rankings you have built. Our website redesign service handles this.
Is Wix bad for SEO?
No. Wix sites can rank on Google. But templates and add-on apps can make pages heavier, and you have less control over the code. A lean custom site makes it easier to be fast and to structure pages exactly for search.
Is a custom website more expensive?
Usually more upfront, while a builder costs a monthly subscription for as long as the site is live, often plus paid apps. Compare the total over a few years, including your own time.
Can I move from Wix to a custom website later?
Yes. The key is to keep or redirect your old page addresses so Google rankings carry over to the new site.
